Biography of Dr. Jerold Robert McBride

Dr. Jerold Robert McBride was born September 20, 1932 in Rocky Ford, CO and died May 11, 2018 in Winnfield, LA, where he grew up and where his father was pastor of First Baptist Church, Winnfield. On June 25, 1954, Jerold married Elizabeth Jane Basore, who was his partner in ministry for 47 years, until her death in December 2003. Jerold and Elizabeth had three children, Renée McBride (of Durham, NC), Charlotte Young (of Grand Prairie, TX), and Todd McBride (of Wichita Falls, TX), and two grandchildren, Jessica Young (of Dallas, TX) and Jaclyn Parrish (of Grand Prairie, TX). Following Elizabeth’s death, Jerold married Claudia Machen on Jan. 1, 2005.

Jerold graduated from Winnfield High School in 1950, received his Bachelor of Science degree from Hardin-Simmons University in 1953, and earned his Master of Divinity in 1956 and Doctor of Theology in 1960 from Southwestern Baptist Seminary. His ministry experience encompasses:

  • 2002-2003: Interim pastor, First Baptist Church, Ozona, TX
  • 1970-2001: Pastor, First Baptist Church, San Angelo, TX
  • 1969-1970: Director of Evangelism, Baptist General Convention of Oklahoma
  • 1964-1969: Pastor, First Baptist Church, Ponca City, OK
  • 1961-1964: Pastor, First Baptist Church, Chickasha, OK
  • 1959-1961: Pastor, Southside Baptist Church, Palestine, TX
  • 1956-1959: Pastor, Tabernacle Baptist Church, Gainesville, TX
  • 1951-1955: Pastor, Calvary Baptist Church, Breckenridge, TX

 

Highlights among his extensive history of denominational service include serving as President of the Baptist General Convention of Texas from 1993-1995, serving on the Baptist Standard Board of Directors from 1989-1998, and serving on the Truett Seminary Board of Trustees from 1991-1993. Two special honors he received were the George W. Truett Distinguished Church Service Award from Baylor University in 2006, and the Hardin-Simmons University Logsdon School of Theology Distinguished Alumnus Award in 1996.

 

Jerold was an active speaker, teacher and writer throughout his life. He taught homiletics in Peru, Brazil, Russia and Ukraine, as well as closer to home in Texas, New Mexico, Arizona, and at Golden Gate Seminary. After his retirement from First Baptist Church, San Angelo, he enjoyed producing the radio show His Word Today, a daily devotional over KCRN AM and FM, San Angelo, TX.
